Judging by the first two episodes, the second season of Thou Shalt Not Kill, which premieres in the US in a couple of days, is as engrossing as the first.

Season 2 of the dark and atmospheric Thou Shalt Not Kill (Non uccidere) features six new two-part stories that star Miriam Leone (1992, 1993, Medici: Masters of Florence) as Chief Inspector Valeria Ferro of the Turin crime squad.

It opens directly after the events in the Season 1 finale and finds Valeria, emotionally fragile on the inside, tough as nails on the outside, and still taped up from the injury she received, revisiting the case files of her father’s murder — a crime for which her mother, Lucia (Monica Guerritore, Rossella), spent 17 years in prison.

Valeria wants, nay, needs to know and understand the truth about what really happened all those years ago, thus perpetuating the strain and tension between her and Lucia and causing friction in her relationship with Giorgio Lombardi (Thomas Trabacchi, Anti-Drug Squad), her boss and lover, who worked on her father’s homicide case.

Putting her personal turmoil aside, Valeria turns her attention to the murder of a 45-year-old divorced woman, found stabbed to death in the apartment she shared with her 20-year-old, violence-prone son. Suspects abound — including the victim’s son, ex-husband, and past and present lovers, as well as the wife of one of the latter — and Valeria must use her detective skills and instincts to narrow them down and find the killer.

In subsequent stories, Valeria and her team investigate the murders of a phys ed teacher, a club owner, a musician, a uni professor, and a family.

Co-starring Matteo Martari (Luisa Spagnoli), Riccardo Lombardo (Drawn for Jury Duty), and Luca Terracciano (Un passo dal cielo), Thou Shalt Not Kill: Season 2 premieres in the US this Thursday, October 25, on Walter Presents.

Note: Thou Shalt Not Kill is one of the Walter Presents titles now available through the PBS Masterpiece channel on Amazon (more about this recent development here). Barring any technical glitches, Season 2 will debut simultaneously on both the SVOD service and the PBS Masterpiece channel.
