Walter Presents has acquired for Euro TV fans in the UK the German thriller Bad Banks, following the screening of the series’ first two episodes earlier today at the 68th Berlinale.
Set in the high-stakes world of international finance and the stock market, Bad Banks follows Jana Liekam, a talented young investment banker who is offered a dream job at Deutsche Invest in Frankfurt, after being being wrongly fired from Crédit International, a prestigious investment bank in Luxembourg. The downside to this major career move is she has to leave her boyfriend and his 5-year-old daughter behind.
Jana’s supervisor at Deutsche Invest is Gabriel Fenger, the prominent Head of Investment Banking, and she quickly impresses him and his team with her passion and ambition. But Jana realizes too late that Christelle Leblanc, her former boss at Crédit International, has secretly been pulling the strings and manipulating her for Christelle’s own advantage. Now Jana finds herself torn between her new obligations and Leblanc’s relentless blackmail, while trying to survive the merciless power play.
Leading the cast are Paula Beer (Frantz, The Dark Valley) as Jana Liekam, Barry Atsma (Black Widow, Baantjer Mysteries) as Gabriel Fenger, Désirée Nosbusch (SOKO Stuttgart, Cenk Batu) as Christelle Leblanc, and Tobias Moretti (Inspector Rex, Anatomy of Evil) as Quirin Sydow, Gabriel’s boss.
A production of Germany’s Letterbox Filmproduktion and Luxembourg’s Iris Production with the participation of ZDF and ARTE, the 6×1-hour series is written by Oliver Kienle (Four Hands, Stronger Than Blood) and directed by Christian Schwochow (NSU: German History X, Inspector Borowski).
Federation Entertainment holds world rights for Bad Banks outside of France and Germany. There has been no announcement about the series being picked up for the US, so stay tuned for any updates.
