French director Jean-Pierre Jeunet will direct the pilot for the Amazon Studios original series about Giacomo Casanova, which features actors from Mexico, the UK, and Serbia.
Jean-Pierre Jeunet, director of Amélie, A Very Long Engagement, Alien: Resurrection, The City of Lost Children, and Delicatessen, amongst others, makes his entry into television with the yet-untitled original series from Amazon Studios about the legendary 18th-century Italian womanizer.
Playing Casanova is Mexican/English actor Diego Luna (Milk, Y Tu Mamá También). Also featuring in the series are Serbian actress Bojana Novakovic (Satisfaction) as Madame de Pompadour, and UK actors Miranda Richardson (Rubicon) as Marquise d’Urfé, Ben Daniels (House of Cards) as Francois-Joachim de Bernis, and Amelia Clarkson (Our Zoo) as Manon Balletti.
Unlike most other screen works based on Casanova’s life, including the 2005 romantic drama starring Health Ledger and the dramedy miniseries starring David Tennant, the Amazon Studios project will focus more on Casanova’s work as a spy for the Parisian government. The pilot opens with Casanova breaking free from Venice’s most impenetrable prison and moving to Paris with nothing to start his life over.
As with other Amazon Studios series, the “Casanova” pilot will likely be one of several available for streaming on Amazon Instant Video later in 2015.
Currently in pre-production, with filming to take place in Paris, Venice, and Hungary, “Casanova” is scripted by Stu Zicherman (The Americans), who also executive produces with Ben Silverman (The Office) and Sarah Caplan (Ray Donovan).
