Production has started on Glória, the first Netflix Original series from Portugal.

Netflix

Set in the 1960s, Glória is an historical spy thriller named after the series’ setting: the small village of Glória do Ribatejo. Located here is RARET, the re-broadcasting office of Radio Free Europe, the American service that broadcasts Western propaganda to the Eastern Bloc.

It is the height of the Cold War, and Glória is becoming an important stage for American and Soviet forces fighting through dangerous sabotage maneuvers to gain control of Europe.

João Vidal, a young engineer whose family has links to the Estado Novo, the Portuguese Fascist Regime, gets recruited by the KGB after becoming politicized in the Colonial War. In taking on several high-risk espionage missions that could change the course of Portuguese and world history, João finds himself involved in the intricate webs of the spy game. Ultimately, he comes to understand that, whatever side he is on, the world, particularly the one of espionage, is never black and white.

Glória features Portuguese and international actors, including Miguel Nunes (Paixão), Carolina Amaral (Vidago Palace), Victoria Guerra (Alma e Coração), Afonso Pimentel (Mysteries of Lisbon), Adriano Luz (Night Train to Lisbon), Joana Ribeiro (Fatima), Marcelo Urgeghe (Maison close), Sandra Faleiro (Terra Nova), Carloto Cotta (Olvidados), Maria João Pinho (Mysteries of Lisbon), Inês Castel-Branco (Amor Maior), Rafael Morais (White Lines), and Leonor Silveira (All the Dead Ones).

An original series written by Pedro Lopes and directed by Tiago Guedes, filming on Glória will take place in the Ribatejo region and in Lisbon.

Stay tuned for updates.
