NATIONAL PREMIERES

Seaside Hotel: Season 1 (Badehotellet) (Denmark)

Having just completed its sixth season in Denmark, this popular period dramedy follows the goings-on amongst the staff and guests at the (fictional) Seaside Hotel from the late 1920s to the late ’30s.

Season 1 is set in 1928, when the 18-year-old, working-class Fie Kjær (Rosalinde Mynster, A Royal Affair) lands a job as a kitchen maid at the rural beach hotel by the North Sea. On her first day, the hotel’s owner is so charmed by Fie that he promotes her to chambermaid on the spot, thus causing shock waves amongst the hotel staff and inspiring curiosity amongst the locals.

As the annual visitors settle into their rooms, Fie begins to learn about their old habits and new secrets, unwittingly becomes party to their betrayals and desires, and discovers that the seemingly idyllic life by the sea is actually much more dramatic than she expected.

Costarring Bodil Jørgensen (Men & Chicken), Lars Ranthe (Dicte), Amalie Dollerup (Borgen), and Morten Hemmingsen (Ride Upon the Storm), Seaside Hotel: Season 1 premieres in the US on Friday, August 2, on Walter Presents US and the PBS Masterpiece channel on Amazon.

Nicolas Gob (Chefs, A French Village) and Eléonore Bernheim (Le silence de l’épervier, Maigret) return as Paris police detective Captain Antoine Verlay and renowned Louvre-based art historian Florence Chassagne in the second season of this popular, modern-day mystery series.

In three new two-part stories, Verlay and Chassagne are tasked with solving murders related to works by celebrated artists, including Impressionist master Claude Monet, Realism movement leader Gustave Courbet, and Dutch Renaissance painter Hieronymus Bosch.

Costarring Philippe Duclos (Spiral) and Benjamin Egner (Guilty as Charged), and guest starring Maud Forget (Origins), Nicolas Marié (The Forest), and Rufus (Blood of the Vine), The Art of Crime: Season 2 premieres in the US on Tuesday, August 6, on MHz Choice and the MHz Choice channel on Amazon.

Their future looks bright until tragedy strikes one morning, when Alex’s body is found at the foot of a cliff. The police rule his death as a suicide, leaving the devastated Sarah without any idea about what could have possibly driven her beloved husband to take such an action. Then she receives a mysterious love letter — one addressed to Alex from a woman she doesn’t know…

Despite one of his targets being a personal friend, Dragi executes his mission with unflinching efficiency.

Eight years later, Dragi gets a new mission: assassinate a target in Germany. But things go horribly wrong. The man he is meant to kill is kidnapped seconds before Dragi was about to pull the trigger. Was this a coincidence, or were the German secret service tipped off?

Costarring the late Ivo Gregurevic (Rest in Peace), Goran Bogdan (Success), Matija Cigir (You Carry Me), Iva Babic (The Romanoffs), and Barbara Nola (On the Border), Guardian of the Castle premieres in the US on Friday, August 9, on Walter Presents and the PBS Masterpiece channel on Amazon.

Noces rouges (Crimson Wedding) (France)

Then tragedy strikes mere hours later: Sandra is found dead at the bottom of a cliff.

What initially looks like suicide could actually be murder, so Alice’s ex-fiancé Vincent (Lannick Gautry, Vanished by the Lake) conducts an investigation. As he zeroes in on an uninvited guest who quickly becomes the prime suspect, the curtain of appearances gets raised and exposes dark family secrets.

Costarring Cristiana Réali (Murder in Burgundy), Patrick Catalifo (No Limit), Alexandra Vandernoot (Station Horizon), and David Baïot (Caïn), Noces rouges premieres in the US on Sunday, August 11, at 11 PM ET, on TV5Monde USA.

Season 1 is set on a housing estate, where the dead body of Jan is discovered. The primary setting for Season 2 is the office of an insurance fraud investigation firm, where Simon falls to his death from the roof of the building. And Season 3 is set in the Welsh countryside, where the children of the Dolwen Farm family return home to scatter their late mother’s ashes and to learn the contents of her will.

Featuring Matthew Gravelle (Living a Lie), Sian Reese-Williams (Hidden), Sharon Morgan (Torchwood), and Dafydd Hywel (Stella), 35 Days: Seasons 1-3 premieres in North America on Tuesday, August 13, exclusively on BritBox.

Anatomy of Evil: Season 2 (Spuren des Bösen) (Austria-Germany)

Yay! After an absence of nearly four years, Heino Ferch (Allmen) returns to US telly in a new season of this brilliant noir mystery-crime drama series. In it he plays Vienna-based police psychologist Richard Brock, a brooding loner and guilt-ridden widower who is still blaming himself for his wife’s suicide and still trying to reconnect with his policewoman daughter Petra (Sabrina Reiter, Die Toten von Salzburg – Schwanengesang).

In the Season 2 opener, a man pushes a woman into oncoming traffic. Eva Faller (Mavie Hörbiger, Tatort), a high-class prostitute, survives the attack by Johannes Rink (Benjamin Sadler, War and Peace), one of her clients. Although Brock is no longer a practicing psychiatrist, Rink’s wife Clara (Julia Koschitz, München 7) goes to him for help anyway, as she thinks the increasingly violent Johannes is schizophrenic. Brock comes to the same conclusion, but before he can do more to help Clara or Johannes, he’s taken into custody.

Costarring Gerda Drabek (CopStories) as Brock’s housekeeper Mrs. Anni and Gerhard Liebmann (Vienna Crime Squad) as his diner-owning friend Klaus Tauber, Anatomy of Evil: Season 2 premieres in the US on Tuesday, August 13, on MHz Choice and the MHz Choice channel on Amazon.

45 rpm (45 Revoluciones) (Spain)

Based on a true story, this 13-part, rock-and-roll-flavored period drama set in 1960s Madrid follows three people — 19-year-old Maribel Campoy (Guiomar Puerta, Carlos, Rey Emperador), her record exec boss Guillermo Rojas (Iván Marcos, Cocaine Coast), and pop singer Rober Aguirre (Carlos Cuevas, Merlí) — as they set out to create a new record label with music that appeals to young listeners’ pop-oriented tastes.

While they form an uneasy love triangle, Generalissimo Francisco Franco has the police going after anyone who’s trying to revolutionize the country, as protesters take to the streets against the dictator’s regime.

Costarring Diana Gómez (Valeria), Pau Vinyals (Merlí), and Pere Ponce (Isabel), 45 rpm, a Netflix Original series, premieres in the US on Friday, August 16, exclusively on Netflix.

Better Than Us (Luchshe chem lyudi) (Russia)

Set in Moscow in a not-so-distant future where human beings coexist with robots, this sci-fi thriller sounds like a Russian remake of the Swedish series Real Humans, but it isn’t.

Humanoid robots are an ordinary part of life in 2029, working as security guards, chauffeurs, child minders, and the like. Arisa (Paulina Andreeva, The Method) is a superbot who has grasped what it means to be human and begins acting (like a better version of) human. Meanwhile, a rebel group rages against the machines and the humans who’ve embraced the bots, and Georgy Safronov (Kirill Kyaro, The Sniffer) finds himself entangled in the first murder committed by an experimental humanoid.

Costarring Aleksandr Ustyugov (The Golden Horde), Olga Lomonosova (The Dawns Here Are Quiet…), and Aleksandr Kuznetsov (BeHappy), Better Than Us, a Netflix Original series, premieres in the US on Friday, August 16, exclusively on Netflix.

Victim Number 8 (La víctima número 8) (Spain)

This drama thriller opens with a terrorist attack that shakes downtown Bilbao and leaves destruction in its wake, including the deaths of seven people and injuries to more than thirty others. The police launch an investigation to hunt down the attackers, and everything points to Tangier-born Omar Jamal Salama (César Mateo, El accidente) as the person responsible.

As the action progresses, it moves to Madrid, where Koro Olaegi (Verónika Moral, Mar de plastico) leads the investigation into the attack. But nothing is as straightforward or cut and dried as it seems on the surface. And not every victim is among the dead…

Costarring Iñaki Ardanaz (Ana by Day), Óscar Zafra (Fugitiva), María de Nati (Mónica Chef), Lisi Linder (Mar de plastico), Farah Hamed (Elite), and Marcial Álvarez (Los nuestros), Victim Number 8, a Netflix Original series, premieres in the US on Friday, August 16, exclusively on Netflix.

Bukow and König: Season 2 (Polizeiruf 110) (Germany)

It’s been nearly five years since this series featuring the Rostock-based crime-fighting duo of veteran cop Alexander Buckow (Charly Hübner, Transporter: The Series) and crime analyst-profiler Katrin König (Anneke Kim Sarnau, The Constant Gardener) arrived in the States, so hurray that it returns with new episodes next month.

Season 2 opens with the discovery of the bullet-ridden body of Achim Hiller, head of Hilgro Wind AG, in a former shipyard. Elsewhere in Rostock, a man is adamant that he’s shot someone to death, and he has gunshot residue on his hand to prove it. But he can’t even remember who he is, much less who he killed or why. After Bukow and König learn that the apparent amnesiac is Max Schwarz (Christian Friedel, Babylon Berlin), a system administrator at the dead man’s company, they begin investigating both men and how they might be connected beyond their employer-employee relationship.

Costarring Uwe Preuss (Deutschland 86), Andreas Guenther (Split Homicide), Josef Heynert (Ella Schön), and Fanny Staffa (Detective Ellen Lucas), Bukow and König: Season 2 premieres in the US on Tuesday, August 20, on MHz Choice and the MHz Choice channel on Amazon.

Wilsberg: Season 3 (Germany)

This long-running mystery-crime drama, based on the novels by Jürgen Kehrer, returns with antiquarian bookseller-cum-private detective Georg Wilsberg (Leonard Lansink, A Case for Two) investigating more murders in Münster.

The new season opens with a shocker: Local homicide cop Anna Springer (Rita Russek, Tatort) calls Wilsberg to a hotel, where a male sex worker lies dead in a room. Her room. Springer insists she is innocent, but she’s still a possible suspect, so Overbeck (Roland Jankowsky, Nikola) leads the police investigation while Wilsberg does his own digging.

Costarring Ina Paule Klink (Money Morder Zurich), Oliver Korittke (Für Umme – Die Serie), and Vittorio Alfieri (A Hard Working Man), Wilsberg: Season 3 premieres in the US on Tuesday, August 20, on MHz Choice and the MHz Choice channel on Amazon.

Spring Tide: Season 2 (Springfloden) (Sweden)

Based on the “Rönning & Stilton” novels by the husband-and-wife writing team of Rolf and Cilla Börjlind (Arne Dahl, Beck), this Scandi mystery-crime drama returns with a new season that finds two murder cases in two European cities connected to each other.

In Stockholm, young cop Olivia Rönning (Julia Ragnarsson, The Bridge) is drawn into the investigation of a customs agent found hanged in his home, while the broken-but-standing former detective Tom Stilton (Kjell Bergqvist, Death of a Pilgrim) heads to Marseille, France, to help his friend Abbas El Fassi (Dar Salim, Dicte) find out why a circus artist, the love of Abbas’ life, was murdered.

Costarring Cecilia Nilsson (Modus), Michaela Thorsén (Ängelby), Arvin Kananian (Syrror), Michael Segerström (Veni Vidi Vici), Kjell Wilhelmsen (30 Degrees in February), Johan Widerberg (Missing), and Saga Samuelsson (The Sandhamn Murders), Spring Tide: Season 2 premieres in the US on Tuesday, August 27, on MHz Choice and the MHz Choice channel on Amazon.

Before We Die: Season 1 (Innan vi dör) (Sweden)

Marie Richardson (Johan Falk) leads the cast of this crime thriller playing Hanna Svensson, a 60-ish cop who’s losing her luster in the organized crime unit of the Stockholm Police. Things on the home front aren’t peachy either; although her son Christian (Adam Pålsson, Don’t Ever Wipe Tears without Gloves) has just been released from his two-year prison sentence, their relationship is still fraught with tension and animosity, as she’s the one who arrested him in the first place.

Then things get worse: Sven (Johan Hedenberg, Miss Friman’s War), Hanna’s colleague and lover, is abducted. As a result, Hanna must take over his undercover investigation of a criminal biker gang, which turns out to be a Croatian family led by Davor Mimica (Alexej Manvelov, Occupied). The rub: the Mimicas have in abundance the things that Hanna and Christian are missing in their family life.

When Hanna discovers Sven has an informant who’s infiltrated the gang, she knows she must protect this person, Inez, too. What she doesn’t know is that Inez is actually her son, and what Christian doesn’t know is that his handler is now his mum. So while their mother-son relationship is constrained and tense, their handler-infiltrator relationship is growing stronger — all while the worlds of the Svenssons and the Mimicas start to collide and put everything and everyone at risk.

Costarring in the 10-episode first season (a second has been commissioned) are Magnus Krepper (Inspector Winter), Sofia Ledarp (Miss Friman’s War), Cedomir Djordjevic (The Sandhamn Murders), and Richard Forsgren (Jordskott). Before We Die: Season 1 premieres in the US on Friday, August 30, on Walter Presents and the PBS Masterpiece channel on Amazon.

Locked Up: Season 3 (Vis a vis) (Spain)

The third season of this women’s prison thriller finds Macarena (Maggie Civantos, Cable Girls) and her crew transferred to the Cruz del Norte penitentiary, where the Chinese gang Tao Triad holds the power amongst the inmates. Being in this new and hostile environment at the bottom of the power structure forces Maca, Zulema (Najwa Nimri, Money Heist), Rizos (Berta Vázquez, Paquita Salas), and their allies to prove their survival skills. Or else.

Costarring Alba Flores (Money Heist), Inma Cuevas (The Zone), and María Isabel Díaz Lago (Dangerous Moms), Locked Up: Season 3 premieres in the US on Friday, August 30, on Netflix.

Having survived the horrors of war, Malik returns home to his family in Czechoslovakia in 1945, but instead of a hero’s welcome, he finds himself battling for his honor and his family.

The telefilm also captures the coercive campaigns of the Soviet People’s Commissariat of Internal Affairs, which tried to gain Malík‘s cooperation at any price, as well as Emil’s relationship with his wife Karla (Lucie Zácková, The Snake Brothers). Because she was married to a foreign soldier during the war, Karla spent three years in a concentration camp in Svatobořice, leaving her children to be cared for by her sister.

When Bernard (Jules-Angelo Bigarnet, Boulevard du Palais) learns he is the fruit of his mother’s extramarital one night stand with a stranger, he flees his home in hurt and anger.
