The winner of the Jury Special Prize for Foreign Fiction at the 2015 La Rochelle TV Festival and one of my favorite Euro TV premieres of 2017, the award-winning Professor T will soon be on a PBS station near you.

This popular Flemish-language mystery-crime drama, which has been remade in French and German, is the second series from Walter Presents to screen on linear TV in the US. The first was the Scandi noir crime thriller Modus, which started its debut on public broadcasting stations back in February.

The Belgian Professor T stars Koen De Bouw (The Team, Salamander) as Jasper Teerlinck, a criminal psychology professor at Antwerp University. He’s like a a cross between Sherlock Holmes, Gregory House, and Adrian Monk — an expert in his field, but with people, not so much.

Like them, the prof has neuroses and eccentricities. To wit: He dons latex gloves because of his pathological fear of germs. He insults nearly everyone with his Tourette’s-like way of calling things as he sees them. And he has Ally McBeal-like flights of fancy. Also like Holmes, House, and Monk, Teerlinck is a highly-likable character.

In the series opener, Inspectors Annelies Donckers (Ella Leyers, 13 Commandments) and Daan de Winter (Bart Hollanders, Salamander) investigate the rape of a student on the university’s campus. The same thing happened to one of Annelies’ friends a decade ago, and the detective thinks the same person committed both crimes. So when police inquiries don’t turn up anything, she asks Teerlinck — the best professor she ever had — for help.

Jasper obliges and thus becomes an official advisor to the Antwerp Police’s homicide squad, much to the surprise and chagrin of Annelies and Daan’s boss, Chief Inspector Paul Rabet (Herwig Ilegems, Grenslanders).

And perhaps to our surprise, there’s more to Teerlinck than meets the eye. For example, his shared past with Police Commissioner Christina Flamant (Tanja Oostvogels, Cordon)…

Professor T will begin airing on PBS stations across the US starting Thursday, May 2. (Check your local listings for specific air dates and times.) It will also be available on that date for streaming on PBS Passport, the PBS membership streaming benefit.

The series will continue to be available on the PBS Masterpiece Prime Video Channel.
