The second season of fabulous French mystery-crime drama Balthazar premiered in the US today. Vachement chouette!

One of my favorite Euro TV premieres of 2019, Balthazar is back with ten new episodes starring Tomer Sisley (The Heir Apparent: Largo Winch, We’re the Millers, Philharmonia) as Raphaël Balthazar, a quirky and irreverent yet charming and endearing forensic pathologist who solves many a crime mystery in and around Paris. Brilliant as he is, though, the one he hasn’t been able to crack is the murder of his wife, Lise (Pauline Cheviller, Mystery in Paris).

Season 2 opens the day after the night before (from the Season 1 closer). Balthazar and Detective Jérôme Delgado (Yanig Samot, La Mante, Murders in Lorraine) are at a crime scene where evidence by the bloodied dead body of a small white dog points to there being human victims as well. As Delgado and Chief Inspector Hélène Bach (Hélène de Fougerolles, Murder in Strasbourg, Le secret d’Elise) investigate the case with Balthazar’s assistance, Raph is suffering from something that his new car, a classic Mustang (!), can’t heal. So says Lise, who along with the dead in Balthazar’s lab, has interesting chats with him.

Another case finds a family plagued by the spooky goings-on in and around their must-be-haunted house, in an episode reminiscent of The Shining (right down to the creepy twins). This, after the bones of a recent victim are discovered amongst those of people who died from the plague during the Middle Ages. (This won’t be the only case that Balthazar works on that involves the plague, either.)

As the new season continues, the lives of Balthazar and Bach are put in grave danger as they and Delgado delve into cases involving murder, suicide, and kidnapping. Meanwhile, Balthazar gets a new girlfriend and Bach’s family situation gets worse before it gets better, as the two track down a suspect in Lise’s murder.

Returning to the series are Philypa Phoenix (Osmosis) as forensic pathology trainee Fatim, Côme Levin (Missions) as her colleague Eddy, and Aliocha Itovich (Art of Crime) as Hélène’s husband, Antoine. Leslie Medina (Chefs, No Second Chance) joins the cast as Maya, Balthazar’s new girlfriend.

All ten episodes of Balthazar: Season 2 are now available for streaming in the US exclusively on Acorn TV and its digital channels, including Acorn TV on Amazon.

The series has been renewed for a third season. Stay tune for updates.
