Code 37, an intense, gritty crime drama that scored big with viewers in Belgian, is one to add to your to-watch list once it debuts on both sides of the pond.

There aren’t too many new shows that achieve a 44% share, but Code 37 did just that when it was released locally on Belgium’s VTM, the main commercial TV station in Flanders. It went on to become VTM’s flagship series that year.

(In TV speak, share is the percentage of viewers tuned in to a specific program, out of all viewers who are watching telly in that market during that particular hour.)

Code 37 stars multiple-award winner Veerle Baetens (Beyond the Walls, The Team, Cordon) as Hannah Maes, the new chief inspector of an all-male vice squad in the Ghent police department. Smart, tough, and gutsy, Hannah gives as good as she gets (better, even) and can be just as combative when her authority and skills are challenged by her colleagues.

One of them is Charles Ruiters (Marc Lauwrys, Tom & Harry, Deadline 25/5), an experienced, divorced 57-year-old vice cop who knows every sex worker across the city. A smoker with asthma, claustrophobia, and thoughts of retirement, his only bright spots in life are his daughter and grandchildren. His primary goal is to hunt and catch pedophiles.

Another is 37-year-old Bob De Groof (Michael Pas, Cordon, De Ridder), aka the “muscles from Antwerp.” A macho, alpha male womanizer with a big mouth and ego to match, he always plays the bad cop. Lastly, there’s Kevin Desmet (Gilles De Schrijver, The Missing, Tom & Harry), the 28-year-old IT specialist who’s better with computers than people.

Whether they get along or not (the men eventually grow to respect Hannah), they have more important things to do than diss each other. Namely, to save the victims and nab the perpetrators of all manner of sex crimes — from sexual assault, rape, and incest, to child pornography, pedophilia, and prostitution.

For Hannah, there’s more besides. And it’s personal. She’s haunted and tormented by her past: her family’s secret, her brother’s disappearance, and the violent rape of her mother during a robbery at her home. Now Hannah is on an obsessive quest for the truth and out for revenge. And her team, in one way or another, is going to help her.
